Harry Dickason was born in 1885. A Royal Navy petty officer, he joined the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) as Able Seaman. The expedition spent two winters at Cape Evans on Ross Island. Extensive scientific investigations and exploration was conducted along the coast of Victoria Land and on the Ross Ice Shelf. Dickason served with the Northern Party, led by Victor Campbell. This party spent the first year at Cape Adare and the second year exploring and sledging along the Victoria Land coast. When the expedition ship Terra Nova was unable to rendezvous with the party they wintered for seven months in a snow cave on Inexpressible Island without adequate supplies before returning safely to the base at Cape Evans. Dickason was awarded the polar medal for his part in the expedition. He died in 1943.
