Whitside entered the U.S. Army in 1858 and was in 6th Cavalry till 1861. Promoted to Captain (1866), Major, 7th Cavalry (1885), Lt. Colonel, 3rd Cavalry (1895), Colonel, 10th Cavalry (1898), Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers (1901). Reverted to Colonel, 10th Cavalry and became Brigadier General, U.S. Army, (1902). During the Civil War period he was with the Army of the Potomac and saw action in the Virginia campaigns (1862-1863). From 1865 to 1898 he served with several U.S. Cavalry regiments at various western posts. He commanded the Dept. of Santiago and Puerto Principe, Cuba (1900-01). Died in 1904.
