Smith, John Lee, 1894-1963
Lieutenant Governor of Texas from 1943-1947. Born in Chico, Wise County, Texas, 1894.
Moved to Throckmorton, Texas, at the age of six. Smith served in the Army during World War I and afterward went into law. Elected Throckmorton County Judge in 1920, Smith was admitted to the Texas bar in 1927. Smith was elected to the Texas Senate in 1940, and to the first of two terms as Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1942. Following an unsuccessful bid for the governorship in 1946, Smith moved to Lubbock in 1947, where he practiced law until his death in 1963.
