Matthew Frederick Christopher was born in Bath, Pennsylvania in 1917. As a youth he was very interested in sports but also in reading and decided to become a writer at an early age. He was a minor-league baseball player until injured. He then worked in a variety of jobs, writing on the side, until he became a full-time writer in 1963. His first children's book was The Lucky Baseball Bat, a story that remains one of his most popular.
