Rottenberg graduated from Hope College in 1952 and from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1955. He served several pastorates in the 1950s and 1960s but is best known as communications officer for the Reformed Church in America (1968-1978). He was dismissed from that position because of his outspoken criticism of the National Council of Churches' position on Israel. He later became the Executive Director of the National Christian Leadership Conference for Israel.
