The Milwaukee Solvay Coke Company was incorporated in 1902 as the Milwaukee Coke and Gas Company by the Schlesinger Interests. In 1905 the company constructed a plant and supplied gas to the Milwaukee Gas Light Company. In the 1920s Milwaukee Coke and Gas was acquired by the Koppers Company, a coke manufacturing conglomerate. Milwaukee Coke and Gas changed its name to Milwaukee Solvay Coke Company in 1942, and in 1947 the company was acquired by the Milwaukee Gas Light Company. In 1962 Milwaukee Solvay was acquired by Pickands, Mather and Company. In the late 1970s, control of the company reverted to Milwaukee Gas Light, which had changed its name to Wisconsin Gas Company in 1965. The Milwaukee Solvay Coke Company was closed in 1983. The Milwaukee Solvay Quarter Century Club was organized in 1943 by employees with 25 or more years of company service, and continued to function until Milwaukee Solvay ceased operations in 1983.
