Betsy Cromer Byars was born in North Carolina in 1928. She attended Furman University from 1946-1948. She received a BA from Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1950. She also attended West Virginia University. She did not start writing for children until she was in her thirties. Byars is now a prolific author who has won numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal for Summer of the Swans in 1971. She is known for her sympathetic and humorous characterizations and plots.
