Jack McDonald started covering sports for the San Francisco call-bulletin in 1926. He became the Call-bulletin's sports editor from 1947-1959, after serving in the navy in World War II. In 1969 he moved to Mexico and began freelance travel writing. In 1978 he moved to San Diego and resumed sports writing. McDonald authored two books: Something to cheer about, and Navy retread.
