Paul Fried, born in Leipzig, Germany, graduated from Hope College in 1946. He received a masters degree in history from Harvard University in 1947 and a Ph. D. from the University of Erlangen (Germany) in 1949. He joined the faculty of Hope College as Instructor in History in 1953. During his tenure at Hope he also served as chair of the history dept. (1959-1973), director of the Vienna Summer School (1956-1969; 1971-1973), and director of International Education (1964-1981).
