Parker, John, active 1861-1864

There is a John M. Parker of Company G, 1st Alabama Regiment, listed as one of the dead buried at Camp Chase, Ohio (died January 29, 1865, Grave Number 943). Parker (unit not identified) who died December 27, 1864, at the Battle of Franklin where the 1st Alabama lost heavily. See www.newmediamarkets.com/Guestbook/guestbook.html. A muster roll of the 1st Alabama lists a Corporal John M. Parker of Co. G and Co. C. Parker was the great-great uncle of the donor of the letters, Alan Y. Roberts, and was from Troy, Alabama. Parker's father was William Reese Parker.

1st Alabama Infantry Regiment, first regiment organized under an act of the Alabama Legislature, authorizing a one-year troop enlistment. Served around Pensacola, Fla., Feb. 1861-Mar. 1862, chiefly manning artillery batteries and participating in bombardments on November 23, 1861, and January 1, 1862, which are described in Parker's letters. Surrendered at Island No. 10 in April 1862, its men were later exchanged. Participated in battles of the 1864 Atlanta Campaign, and lost heavily later in Tennessee at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. The regiment ended up in North Carolina and fought at Bentonville in 1865, its remnants surrendering at Goldsboro.
