Ballet dancer, choreographer, teacher and director. Cecil Bates was born in Newcastle, N.S.W., to a soprano mother and pianist father. At an early age, he participated in his mother's annual dancing school concerts. Trained by Helen Kirsova and Grace Norman, he was principal dancer with the Ballet Rambert, London, and the Walter Gore Ballet. He assisted with the formation of Walter Gore's Australian Theatre Ballet. In the 1960s, Bates was the Artistic Director of the South Australian National Ballet Company. He was also the proprietor and teacher at the South Australian Repertory Ballet School, Adelaide.
