The Susquehanna Bridge Company was incorporated in Maryland on Dec. 24, 1812 to build a toll bridge across the Susquehanna River between Port Deposit and Rock Run. A supplement of Jan. 19, 1815, allowed the company to increase its capital by $500,000 and granted it banking powers, changing the name to the Susuquehanna Bridge and Bank Company. The bridge was completed in 1818 by Theodore Burr. It was partly destroyed by fire in 1823 and rebuilt by Lewis Wernwag around 1828-30. A portion collapsed under a herd of cattle in 1854, and the unused remainder was destroyed in the flood and ice gorge of the spring of 1857.
