After graduation from the U.S. Army Military Academy (USMA), he was a 2nd lieutenant, 20th U.S. Infantry Regiment; 1st lieutenant, 19th and 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiments; captain, 25th U.S. Infantry Regiment; major, 7th and 2nd U.S. Infantry Regiments; lieutenant colonel and colonel, 60th U.S. Infantry Regiment; brigadier general, 83rd and 153rd Infantry Brigades; colonel, Adjutant General's Office (AGO); student and instructor, Naval War College; Chief of Staff (CoS), XII (12th) Corps; brigadier general, 12th Infantry Brigade; commanding general, VI (6th) Corps; and commanding general (CG), 3rd Infantry Division.
