Penington, John, 1799-1867

John Penington (1799-1867), the son of Edward and Helena Lawrence (Holmes) Penington, was a bookseller in Philadelphia, Pa., and a member of the American Philosophical Society, having a "national reputation as a scholar, antiquary, and bibliophile." Born on 1 August 1799 in Mulberry Hill, N.J., Penington was a descendant of Isaac Penington, the well-known seventeenth century Quaker leader, eldest son of the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Isaac Penington, a commissioner on the trial of Charles I and cohort of Oliver Cromwell. He died on 18 March 1867.
