Anderson, James. Had served in Marine Service. Locally appointed. Name in Dictionary of National Biography. Born 17 January 1738. Doctor of Medicine [M.D.] Edinburgh 17-. Surgeon Mate, afterwards Surgeon 'Drake' 1759-61; Surgeon of 'Essex' 1762. Appointed Surgeon Madras Army, in 1762, for service in Manilla expedition; and while at Manilla held a commission, he states, in King's and Company's service at the same time. (Madras Military Consultations [M. Mily. Cons.] 26 Oct. 1786. Name not in Johnston's Roll of Royal Army Medical Corps [R.A.M.C.] In a letter dated 8 August 1782; (Madras Military Consultations Miscell. Book, 1782), he states that he was Surgeon to King's Artillery and M.D. before entering Indian Medical Service [I.M.S.]. Second Surgeon Madras, v. Scott, D. 27 April 1772; (Madras Consultations). Surgeon Major, 27 November 1780; (Madras Military Consultations). Senior Surgeon Madras, with title of Surgeon General v. Pasley, D. 17 October 1781; (Madras Military Consultations). First President Medical Board, with title of Physician General. 14 April 1786. Died at Madras, 15 August 1809. Philippine expedition, 1762, capture of Manilla. Field Service in Norther Circars, 1766-67. Author of Letters on Cochineal, 1781; Letters on Cochineal, Coffee and Silk, 1789-96; Minerals of Coromandel, 1797; a volume of his correspondence was published at Madras in 1800. v.
