Variant namesc 1914-1918 entered the cotton business; 1919 formed the Birla Brothers Limited; 1926 elected to the Central Legislative Assembly of British India; 1929 founded the Birla Engineering College, Pilani (1964 renamed the Birla Institute of Technology and Science); 1930s set up sugar and paper mills; 1940s established Hindustan Motors; 1943 founded the Technological Institute of Textile and Sciences in Bhiwani; 1947- invested in teas and textiles, diversified into cement, chemicals, rayon and steel tubes; 1957 Padma Vibhushan.
