Historical note: Henderson Settlement School, in Frakes, Kentucky, was established in 1925 by Hiram M. Frakes, a Methodist minister from Indiana. Long associated with the United Methodist Church, the school provided elementary and secondary education for Appalachian children in the Middle Laurel Fork valley region of Bell County. Profits from a campus farm were used to finance students' tutition and board.
In 1930 the first 4-H Club in the country was established at the school. In 1976 educational activities ceased and the school became a community center. The center maintains child care and agricultural facilities, provides recreational programs and library services, and operates a craft shop and opportunity store. In addition, the center provides tutoring, housing, and counseling for children.
