Harlow Rockwell was born in 1910. He studied at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and at the Pratt Institute in New York City. He wrote and illustrated his first picture book for children, [the] ABC Book, in 1961. Throughout his long and prolific career, Harlow Rockwell collaborated on many picture books for very young readers with his wife, Anne Rockwell; he also co-illustrated My Spring Robin with their daughter, Lizzy Rockwell. Harlow Rockwell's books focus on the experiences, events, and places that make up a young child's' world such as going to the dentist, or barber, or working in the kitchen. His books' text and illustration are simple and realistic with precise detail yet they are never simplistic or dull. Harlow Rockwell's illustrations and text have enough variety and high level of recognizability to capture and maintain a young child's interest. Harlow Rockwell worked primarily in ink and watercolor and his work alone or in collaboration with Anne Rockwell is easily recognizable, admired by critics, and enjoyed by young readers. Harlow Rockwell died on April 7, 1988
