Dr. Walter K. Fisher was a notable marine biologist, an authority on starfish and sea urchins. He took his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Stanford University in the first decade of the 20th century and was director of its Hopkins Marine Laboratory in Pacific Grove, from 1917 to 1943. In 1922, he wed Anne Benson, who became a prominent writer under her married name, Anne B. Fisher. In addition to his illustrations for two of his wifeʼs books, Dr. Fisher was a member of the Carmel Art Association, where his paintings were exhibited frequently, as well as in other Peninsula galleries. He was also the author of numerous articles on avian and marine life, published by the Smithsonian Institute and in other scientific journals.
