Helen Whitelowe established the Soul People Repertory Company, Inc. in Indianapolis in 1975. The organization was structured to "provide Greater Indianapolis and Central Indiana audiences with the many cultural facets and forms for enlightenment through theater from a black perspective." Helen Whitelowe directed the majority of the group's performances through the 1980s. Other directors included Bob Gillan, Bernie Hall, Joseph Laderson, and Glenn White. The company also sponsored community programs, and theater, dance, and martial arts classes. The company closed in 1995.
