Stephen Fleet, Master

Stephen Fleet was Master of the College and Registrary Emeritus of the University of Cambridge. He was born on 28 September 1936 and was educated at Lewes County Grammar School in Sussex and St John's College Cambridge where he took his MA and PhD. Stephen had a distinguished academic career in Mineral Sciences and Crystallography and became a Founding Fellow of Fitzwilliam College in 1963. In 1974, whilst continuing his academic work, he became Fellow and Bursar of Downing. From 1983-1997 he became Registrary of the University and continued to serve the College as President (1983-1985) and Vice-Master (at various times). On retirement from his University duties, he continued to devote himself to the College, becoming Master in 2001 and Honorary Fellow in 2003. He married Alice Percival in 2002 and died on 18 May 2006
