Donald Kitzman was born on April 15, 1922. He originally enlisted in the US Navy, but was drafted into the Army when his enlistment was cancelled. Kitzman went through basic training at Camp Roberts, Calif. where he was assigned to Company F of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He moved with the regiment to Fort Ord, Calif. when his unit trained for the invasion of Kiska Island, Alaska. Following occupation duty at Kiska Island, Kitzman trained at Camp Carson, Colo. before being assigned to the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. He also served at Camp Swift, Tex. before being sent to Italy. During comat operations at Mt. Serra, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions on April 17, 1945.
