The position of Director of Admissions was created in 1937 to assume the duties relating to admission of students to the university previously handled by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

David Rothrock was the first director, 1937-1938. He was followed by Frank Reel Elliott, 1938-1946, and William H. Strain, 1946-1971. Beginning in 1946, the Office of Admissions came under the indirect supervision of the Registrar. In 1948 the budgets of the two offices were merged and the following year a single name, Office of Records and Admissions, was adopted. This arrangement continued until 1979.

The position of Director of Admissions was created in 1937 to assume the duties relating to admission of students to the university previously handled by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. David Rothrock was appointed the first Director of Admissions in 1937 (1/2 time), carrying on the same duties he had performed in his capacity as Dean of Arts and Sciences from 1920-37. He resigned in 1938.

In 1938, the Office of Admissions was re-organized and expanded to carry out services previously administered by different offices (Publicity, Registrar). Frank Elliott was appointed Director of Admissions in 1938 and served in that capacity until 1946. "Beginning in 1946, the Admissions Office came under the indirect supervision of the Registrar. The old name was still retained & actual performance of the office was separate. In 1948, the budgets of the Registrar's Office and the Admissions Office were merged. Effective 1949, the single name (Office of Records & Admissions) for both offices was adopted and operations of both offices were merged." (From 1950 Admissions Report).

In 1979, the Office of Records and Admissions was again reorganized and divided into two distinctively separate offices: the Registrar's Office and the Office of Admissions & Recruitment.
