H.M.S. Herald, under the command of Captain Nias, was the ship in which Captain Hobson sailed to New Zealand, arriving at the Bay of Islands 29 January 1840. On 21 February the Herald sailed to the Waitemata, where Hobson suffered a stroke on 1 March.

The ship traveled to the whaling grounds and ports of the Indian Ocean. Captain Elijah B. Morgan headed the second voyage around Cape Horn toward Chile from June 24, 1843, through August 10, 1845.
