Rouček was a professor in the Political Science and Sociology department at Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y. He was at this time revising his book Our Racial and National Minorities and was also preparing a volume on Czechoslovakia.

Joseph S. Roucek (1902-1984) was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He came to the United States in 1921 and studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif., supporting himself with work as a concert pianist, lecturer, and silent movie actor. Roucek later received his Ph. D. from New York University and taught sociology at various American, Canadian and European colleges and universities.

He was the author of numerous books and articles, and founder of Delta Tau Kappa, an international social science honorary society.
