Originally from Tennessee, he moved to Lubbock in 1946, after having lived in Littlefield and Cooper. He owned second-hand clothing, furniture, and book stores in Lubbock and was active in real estate for 25 years. His daughter, Emma Sills, ran one of his stores for him.
