Dr. John Uhler, a native of Media, Pennsylvania, was educated at Johns Hopkins University. He taught at Johns Hopkins and in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While teaching in Baltimore, Uhler also worked for the Baltimore Sun newspaper and became acquainted with fellow journalist, H. L. Mencken. In 1928 Uhler went to Louisiana State University, where he spent the next 32 years as an English professor. He was also the first president of the LSU Faculty Club. Uhler's roles as teacher, author, actor, journalist, linguist, and scholarly researcher made him a 20th-century "Renaissance man." In fact, his teaching and research interests included English Renaissance Literature, and he was a charter member of the Renaissance Society of America. Uhler's publication of "Cane juice" in 1931, which dealt with LSU campus life, resulted in his being fired by Huey Long. He was reinstated six months later, however. Uhler wrote a number of academic books and about 100 articles. He was recognized in "Who's who in America" and "American scholars." While teaching in Kentucky, Uhler met and married Corrine McCreary Barr, with whom he had two sons, John, Jr., and Edward.
