Russell A. Austin was born in 1930 and earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Washington. He became politically active in the Republican Party around 1966, when he ran unsuccessfully for the State House of Representatives. Austin served on a number of key Republican committees in Washington State. He was chairman of the King County Republican Committee circa 1972, chairman of the 1972 Republican State Convention, and Washington State delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980. Austin was appointed to fill a vacancy in the 33rd District at the Washington State Legislature in 1980. He was a long-time supporter of Ronald Reagan.
