Hillel, a campus organization for college students, began in 1923 at the University of Illinois and expanded nationwide with the support of B'nai B'rith. Its purpose is to offer a broad variety of Jewish-related social, cultural, and religious activites to all Jewish students. The Hillel Foundation at Purdue University began in 1939 when the "Purdue Union of Jewish Youth" became an official chapter of the Hillel organization. In addition to student activities at Purdue, Hillel became involved in two significant projects; the Committee on Human Rights in the Soviet Union, and the Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Committee. Today Hillel at Purdue continues to operate offering services and activities for the Jewish students.
