Lamba, Juginder
Variant namesJuginder Lamba was born in Nairobi, Kenya and spent the first ten years of his life there. He came to Britain with his family in 1962, via a four year stay in India. Never formally trained in art, he completed a degree in Politics and Philosophy in Lancaster and then a postgraduate degree in Education. He then went on to form a touring performance troop, Earthbound Theatre Company. Alongside this Lamba had also been developing his own style as a sculptor and was named the first town artist of Lancaster in 1978. Lamba’s source material is primarily wood, although he also works in stone and bronze, and he has created sculptures that are exhibited all over the world. Key public works include the Icarus Project in 1990, with fellow sculptor Tony Philips and the series of ACE (Artists and Craftsmen in Education) projects carried out throughout England. He has exhibited widely in Britain and internationally with significant shows including ‘Relics’, ‘Trophies of Empire’ and ‘Routes’. Lamba was the recipient of the Henry Moore Fellowship in Sculpture in 1994.
Additionally, Lamba initiated and directed the South Asian Contemporary Visual Arts Festival in 1993.
