Family of Lewis Goodwin Cates, U.S. Navy veteran of World War I and Army employee, and his wife, Marie Therese Kelleher Cates, of Pittsfield and Monroe, Me.; his parents: Willard and Nellie B. Cates, of Pittsfield and Bar Harbor, Me.; cousins Amy and Minnie Porter, of Pittsfield, missionaries who served in India and worked with the Chinese in San Francisco; and a close family friend, Mary Norcross, teacher and educator, in Winthrop, Me., and other locations.
