Andrew F. Schoeppel was born on his parents' farm in Ness County, Kansas, in1894, where he attended grammar school & high school. In 1916 he enrolled at the University of Kansas. A year later he left K.U. and enlisted in the Naval Reserve Flying Force. Upon his return from the war, Schoeppel enrolled at the University of Nebraska law school, earning an LL. B. in 1922. After law school, he returned to Kansas and established a law practice in Ness City. In his first experience in state-level politics, Schoeppel was drafted in the Republican Party nomination against his wishes in 1938. He lost that election because he made no effort to campaign. Even so, the margin of loss was a narrow one. Schoeppel was determined not to let that happen again. In the 1942 election for governor, Schoeppel won by about 7,000 votes. In the 1944 election he won a second term to the governor's office, but by a much larger percentage than before. Following his time in the governor's office, Schoeppel returned to private practice, specializing in insurance, mineral and real estate law. Schoeppel re-entered politics in 1948 to serve in the U.S. Senate. For the most part, Schoeppel voted along Republican party lines.
