The New Mexico Penitentiary was established in 1884 (1884 NM Laws, Chp. 59, Sec. 1-19). In 1969 the Corrections Act created the Department of Corrections, with the following four divisions: Adult Institutions, Juvenile Institutions and Parole, Adult Probation and Parole, and Other Services (1969 NM Laws, Chp. 226, Sec. 1-21). In 1977 a legislative act changed the name of the Department to the Corrections Division and placed the Division within the newly established Criminal Justice Department (1977 NM Laws, Chp. 257, Sec. 1-108). In 1980 the name of the Criminal Justice Department was changed to the Corrections and Criminal Rehabilitation Department (1980 NM Laws, Chp. 150, Sec. 1-10). In 1981 the Department was reorganized and its name was changed to the Corrections Department (1981 NM Laws, Chp. 73, Sec. 1-9). With the creation of the Children, Youth, and Families Department in 1992, responsibility for juvenile justice services was transferred from the Corrections Department to the Children, Youth, and Families Department (1992 NM Laws, Chp. 57, Sec. 1-58). The function of the Corrections Department is to administer a comprehensive criminal justice system in New Mexico.
