Irven Armstrong was born in Westfield, Hamilton County, Indiana. He was a school teacher in Westfield and taught at Indianapolis Public School no. 17 before serving in the United States Army during World War I. He taught history at Crispus Attucks High School from 1928-1959, retiring as head of the history department. Armstrong was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and was the oldest member of the organization at the time of his death.
