Hide Profile

The Applied Fisheries Laboratory was created at the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1943, with Dr. Lauren R. Donaldson as its first director. In 1946 the laboratory came under the administration of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. It was charged with evaluating the hazards of radiation in and around water, and its main effort was assessing the effect of the Hanford Nuclear Site on the Columbia River. In 1946 the lab began studying the biological effects of nuclear weapons tested at the Eniwetok Test Site at Bikini and Eniwetok Atolls, Marshall Islands, and after an accidental weapon detonation there in 1954, it researched the contamination of fish and native foods in the area. In 1957 a cooperative laboratory was established with the Washington Department of Game at Fern Lake in Kitsap County, Washington. The name of the Applied Fisheries Laboratory changed in 1958 to Laboratory of Radiation Biology, and in 1966 that name changed to Laboratory of Radiation Ecology. The laboratory continued as a division of the University of Washington Fisheries Research Institute until approximately 1987.
