Lloyd Thurston was a lifelong Osceola, Iowa resident. He earned a law degree from the State University of Iowa (1902). He served as Clarke County attorney (1906-1910), state senator (1920-1924), and Iowa representative in the U.S. House of Representatives (1926-1940). He volunteered for military service during the Spanish-American war (51st Iowa Volunteer Regiment), the Philippine Insurrection, and World War I. After his years in Washington he resumed the practice of law in Osceola. He was active in several veterans organizations.
