Maurice Hodgson was born in 1934. After receiving his PHD, he taught at English at Douglas College, BC for nearly twenty years. An avid scholar, he published in Canadian journals such as Canadian Literature and Beaver. He also produced a biography published by Hancock House, with a preface by John D. Diefenbaker, in 1976: The Squire of Kootenay West: A Biography of Bert Herridge. His subjects of inquiry included Canadian history and literature as well as the Polar Expedition of Sir John Franklin. Hodgsons memberships included the Hakluyt Society, Vancouver Historical Society, the Society of the History of Discoveries, Canadian Historical Association, and the Royal Geographic Society. However, Maurice Hodgsons principal interest lay in the study of Sir Edward Belcher. From the early 1970s until his death, Hodgson culled personal relationships with other Belcher enthusiasts, traveled throughout Canada, Britain, and the United States tracing Belchers nautical adventures, and gathered information regarding Belcher from numerous international archives. Maurice Hodgson died in 1997. Since his death, Douglas College created an award to celebrate his achievements, awarded annually to a student of Douglas College: The Maurice Hodgson Memorial Award for Creative Writing.
