New Mexico Labor and Industrial Commission

The Labor and Industrial Commission was established in 1931 and authorized to appoint a Labor Commissioner (1931 NM Laws, Chp. 9, Sec. 1-19). In 1977 the Commission was abolished and its duties were transferred to the Labor and Industrial Bureau of the Employment Services Division of the newly established Human Services Department (1977 NM Laws, Chp. 252, Sec. 5, 14, 26). In 1979 the Labor and Industrial Commission was re-established as an advisory commission to the governor, with the Labor Commissioner an appointee of the governor (1979 NM Laws, Chp. 204, Sec. 8-9). In 1987 a Labor and Industrial Division was created within the newly established Department of Labor, the office of the Labor Commissioner was abolished, and the Labor and Industrial Commission was administratively attached to the Department of Labor (1987 NM Laws, Chp. 342, Sec. 4-8). The Labor and Industrial Commission is charged with reviewing labor policy administration and advising the governor on the enforcement of labor legislation.
