The Volunteer Cavalry Company, 1st Brigade, Iron Military District, Nauvoo Legion was commanded by Captain James Andrus and was mustered into service in Saint George, Utah on August 16, 1866. It consisted of five platoons of twelve men each. They were called to examine the country bordering the Colorado River from the Kaibab Plateau to the mouth of the Green River and examine all the crossings of the Colorado River over this distance.
