Cyrus Bussey was born in Hubbard, Ohio and moved with his wife, Ellen Kiser Bussey, to Bloomfield, Iowa in 1855. He served in the Iowa Senate and was appointed by Governor Kirkwood as an Aide-de-State. During the Civil War he was appointed Colonel of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry and mustered into service on Sept. 5, 1861. His first battle experience came at the Battle of Pea Ridge in March of 1862. He also fought in the Battle of Vicksburg as commander of a cavalry brigade and was appointed Brigadier General in 1864. After the war Bussey was a successful businessman in St. Louis and New Orleans. In 1881 he moved to New York and entered the world of politics for a second time. President Harrison appointed him assistant secretary of the interior in 1889. After resigning from this position Bussey established a law practice in Washington, D.C.

Cyrus Bussey, a native of Iowa, moved to Bloomfield, Iowa, in 1855. After serving as a Democrat in the Iowa Senate, Busseu was appointed by Governor Kirkwood as an Aide-de-State and was charged with sharing the responsibility for the defense of the state. During the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel of the 3rd Iowa Cavalry, and saw action in Missouri, Arkansas, and the battles of Pea Ridge and Vicksburg.
After the war, Bussey was a successful businessman and lawyer in St. Louis, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C. He was also appointed the Assistant Secretary of the Interior (1889) during the Harrison administration.
