Planter and businessman of Greenville, S.C.; developer of textile industry during antebellum era, including Camperdown Mills on the Reedy River; born in Spartanburg County in 1775, McBee was called 'The Father of Greenville.'

Vardry founded many business and civic organizations; he contributed land for various churches and academies in Greenville, and was instrumental in relocating Furman University from Edgefield to Greenville in 1851, and in securing for Greenville in 1853 its first railroad, the Columbia and Greenville, for which he later served as president.
