Williams, Adele Cutts,

The daughter of Ellen O'Neale and James Madison Cutts, a Treasury Department official, and grandniece of Dolley Madison, Williams was born in Maryland into a prominent Catholic family, and educated at a church academy in Georgetown. In 1856 she married presidential candidate Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861), senator from Illinois. Widowed, she married General Robert Williams (1829-1901), a prominent army officer, in 1866. Adele Williams is buried beside her second husband in Arlington National Cemetery.
