Illustrator. $b Sherrill Martin was raised in Perry County, Kentucky. While a student at Vicco High School, Martin created illustrations for a Carrs Fork Coal Company newsletter which emphasized mine safety. Martin's illustrations served to remind the miners that safety was indeed their responsibility and was, in fact, their patriotic duty to the World War II war effort. During World War II Martin served in the Navy (1945-1946). In 1946 he entered the Chicago Art Institute where he studied until 1950. In 1951 he began an eleven- year career as a commercial artist for firms in Louisville, Cincinnati, and Dayton. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1962.
