Charles Raymond Sheaff (October 9, 1867-May 22, 1942) was born in Holcomb, Illinois. In 1892, he enlisted in the National Guard of California and served in the U.S. Navy until March 1900. In 1903, he married Ellen Grinsell in Bakersfield, California.

Charles Raymond Sheaff (October 9, 1867-May 22, 1942) was born in Holcomb, Illinois. In 1892, he enlisted in the National Guard of California and served in the U.S. Navy until March 1900. In 1903, he married Ellen Grinsell in Bakersfield, California.

Peter Sheaff, father of Charles Raymond Sheaff, served as a Union soldier with the Army of Tennessee during the Civil War in Company A, Second Illinois Calvary Regiment.

John Fox, father of Kate Fox Sheaff (mother of Charles Raymond Sheaff) enlisted in the Union Army on Aug.13, 1862 to serve three years. He was mustered in Sept. 2, 1862 from Franklin, Ill. He was taken to a hospital in Gallatin, Tenn. on Feb. 19, 1863 by order of the Surgeon. Found to be incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Phthiois Pulmonalis and declared not eligible for a pension on March 16, 1863. Discharged on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability at Hospital No. 3, Gallatin, Tenn. on March 17, 1863 by order of General Rosencrans. Died at Cherry Valley, Ill. on April 6, 1863 of chronic diarrhea leaving widow and 7 children, ages 8 months to 17 years.
