George S. Fitzgerald was born Dec. 26, 1901 in Troy, N.Y. He earned an A.B. from Holy Cross College in Worchester, Mass. and an LL.B from the University of Detroit. He married in 1929. He was a member of the Detroit, Michigan and American Bar associations. With his son, William, he began a law practice. He held numerous government positions and was a faculty member of the University of Detroit Law School. He was elected to the State Senate in 1964, representing the Grosse Pointe Park area. He served 3 terms, being elected to the Democratic National Committee and was the Senate Democratic leader from 1970-1974. He retired in 1974, and died May 28, 1980, at the age of 79.
