Southwest Texas State Teachers College

Created in 1893 by the Texas Legislature, the Southwest Texas Normal School in San Marcos opened in 1903 to educate and certify teachers for the public schools of Texas. Promoted to a full-fledged senior college, the Southwest Texas Normal College, in 1918, the school again changed its name five years later to the Southwest Texas State Teachers College. A cooperative agreement with San Marcos created progressive laboratory schools in the city's public system, allowing student teachers to gain firsthand experience. In 1950, the college greatly expanded its campus and curriculum to offer graduate degrees, causing a leap in enrollment. By 1969 the school had expanded into academic disciplines other than education and become Southwest Texas State University. Additionally, it gained attention in the 1960s as the alma mater of Lyndon Baines Johnson
