Born in Buffalo, New York, Zigmond Kalnitz moved to Arizona in 1956 with his parents. He went to elementary and high school in Phoenix and later attended Arizona State University. His father purchased Parry's Bar in Tempe, Arizona in 1956 and owned it until 1972-1973. Zig helped his father run the bar during the heyday of the "street people" era, and also operated a nearby counter-culture shop, Inner Sanctum.
