The office of the Provost of the University was created in 1945 and discontinued in 1953 when Paul H. Buck, the only person to hold the position, resigned his administrative posts. The Provost, who also served as ex-officio Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, had under his general charge most of the University's museums, libraries and other research institutions.
