The University of Wyoming Staff Senate grew out of a Personnel Advisory Committee that was formed in 1973 to advise the Director of Personnel. In 1975 UW President William Carlson provided for the establishment of a Staff Council based upon the desire of UW staff to have a larger role in University governance.
Unireg 34, approved by the UW Trustees in 1976, formally established the Staff Council, which is currently composed of 45 members representing staff employees. The organization changed its name in 1994 to Staff Senate and works on a variety of budget and personnel issues, along with honoring staff through its Staff Recognition Day and the Staff Employee of the Quarter. Staff Senate also publishes a monthly newsletter, the Lariat.
