Robert Fridenberg was a member of the Grolier Club (a New York City bibliophile society). A major collecting interest centered around early American engraved portraits, particularly portraits of Benjamin Franklin. His interest in Franklin led him to collect 18th and early 19th century documents connected with American booksellers and printers, as well as a number of documents from England.
